Cryovials

Cryovials are used to store cells to suspend the growth process and preserve their cellular properties temporarily so that they can be resuscitated for use in experiments when needed. They are placed in liquid nitrogen tanks or refrigerators and are often used with cryovial box and cryovial rack.

FAQ of Cryo Vials

Why did a criovial burst?

The cap is not tightened, causing liquid nitrogen infiltration into the tube. When taking the tubes out from the liquid nitrogen tank, the temperature inside rises, the nitrogen vaporize rapidly. Excess nitrogen can not be excluded from the tube in time, the pressure nitrogen inside increases dramatically. When the tube can not withstand the high pressure generated it will  rupture.

How to prevent plastic cryovials from bursting?

  1. Try not to put the tube directly into the liquid, but put them into the gas, or put them directly into the refrigerator for freezing.
  2. Use internal thread tubes with good quality and good sealing. The liquid nitrogen in the internal thread is easier to be discharged when it is vaporized compared with the external thread vial. Therefore, it would be less likely to burst.
  3. Tighten the cap as much as possible.

How to use polypropylene cryovials?

  1. Sample preparation
Use a serological pipette or single-channel pipette to dispense the sample to be stored into tubes to avoid sample contamination.
  2. Seal and label
Tighten the tube cap and use a cryolabel to mark it in detail, such as sample number, freezing date, etc.
  3. Store in cryobox or cryorack
Categorize and store the packaged tubes in cryobox or cryorack for systematic management.
  4. Freeze and store
Put the cryobox in an ultra-low temperature freezer (-80°C) or liquid nitrogen tank for long-term storage. Be sure to wear cryogloves to protect your hands during operation.
What is the difference between cryotubes and microcentrifuge tubes?

Cryo tubes are designed to withstand extremely low temperatures, have a stronger structure, and have better sealing performance; while microcentrifuge tubes are mainly used for small volume sample centrifugation operations at room temperature or in a refrigerated environment, and are generally not suitable for liquid nitrogen environments.

What types of caps are there for the product?

Common types include internal thread cryovials (the cap is screwed on the inside of the tube mouth) and external thread cryovials (the cap is screwed on the outside of the tube mouth). The external screw cap design is more suitable for liquid nitrogen environments and can effectively prevent bursting caused by internal liquid expansion.
